Don Ayers Outfitter - November Whitetail Hunt

We would like to invite you to share in some of the finest fair chase Whitetail hunting in Alberta.  Over the years, Alberta has become renowned throughout North America for its massive Deer size and antler quality that consistently occupies this region of western Canada.  Our hunts are in November of each year, which is when the Whitetail & Mule deer rut is at its peak in Alberta.
Whitetail Within Your Sights

Most mature Alberta bucks weigh in at close to 250 - 300 pounds on the hoof and will carry a rack in the 140 plus range, with 180 to 190 class Deer being taken each Fall.  For years, we have provided our hunters with great opportunities on trophy class Deer, but with the past winters being mild, we know that most of our mature bucks are surviving the winter so the best hunting is yet to come.  We also recommend that every hunter purchase a wolf and coyote stamp so that he/she may shoot them for added excitement. In some areas you can also hunt Mule Deer.
Where We Hunt

We hold all the Whitetail allocations in WMU 347 an area north west of Edmonton. The south boundary of this area is the beautiful Athabasca River, west of Whitecourt, Alberta. This is great whitetail habitat covering some 500 sq miles (320,000 acres); we hunt our mule deer in this area also, this is woods hunting at its best. This area has a lot of timber clear cuts offering deer an abundance of feeding opportunities. The hunter can expect to be hunting cut lines or watching the open clear cuts.
Trail Cameras
We have found the use of trail cameras to be a real asset to our whitetail hunting.  These cameras are put on the scraps and monitored on a very regular basis.  If the opportunity allows we will show you the Buck that you are after, but we still get some really great surprises when bigger bucks show up.  These cameras go out on he trails in mid August and are used until after we are done hunting.

You can see some of the bucks that we will be hunting in the 2010 season on the Whitetail Photo Page
All the Comforts of Camp

We house our clients at a hotel or motel with a restaurant. We supply all meals and rooms no matter where you stay. We run small personable camps, generally with only 2 - 4 hunters per week.
Firearms Recommendation

We all have our favorite Deer hunting rifle up to 100 yards, but in Alberta you must be prepared for that 2-3 or 400 yard shot.  Our recommendation is a flat shooting rifle with a good partition bullet. The further you can shoot, the more opportunities we may be able to offer. Most of our bucks are shot at under 150 yards and in 2007 over 1/2 of our bucks were shot at under 50 yards; this is deep bush hunting. For the archery hunter most shots are 20 - 40 yards.

NOTE: It is very easy to bring a rifle or bow into Canada (ask us about permits).

Method of Hunting

This is all day hunting; we use ground blinds and tree stands to sit in.  Make sure that you bring your grunt tube. These blinds can be heated to keep you more comfortable if the weather gets real cold.  This is our most successful style of hunting.   We will also do some rattling and calling if conditions are right to get the big bucks moving.  Although methods are varied, they have all proven successful. We do not push bush.
Weather and Clothing

All of these hunts take place in November (considered to be the Whitetail Rut) and you must be prepared for some cold weather and snow.  Temperatures of  - 10 degrees to -15 are not uncommon, but 20 degrees to 0 is common and so proper preparation is the key. Your clothing should be layered and outer clothing should be late Fall Camo or Snow Camo.  To keep your feet warm, good felt lined boots are essential.
2010 November Schedule & Rates
Whitetail Deer Hunts
2010 Schedule

We have a very limited number of these Whitetail hunts. You can book either a 6 or 9 day hunt. On the 9 day hunts you can add Mule Deer after you have taken your Whitetail in some areas; this has to be noted when booking your hunt to make sure that you will be in the right area. The past few years have  been great for us with 75% of our clients taking Whitetails in the 140 to 175 class, and several of the hunters reporting that they saw and shot at Whitetails in the170 - 180 class. It must be good hunting as a lot of the hunters have re-booked.

Your Host:
In 1953 my mother lied about my age to get me my first deer hunting license ( I was supposed to be 12 years old and I wasn't ) and I have been hunting for Whitetail and Mule deer ever since.

My philosophy on deer hunting is very simple,

First: Hunt all day and watch the scrape lines.

Second:  Do my scouting before you start hunting.
(see our trail camera pictures)

Third: and most importantly have the hunter where the Big Buck are.

I have been taking hunters for over 30 years and over the last 10 years we have averaged  75 to 80% kill rate on trophy class bucks

We want the hunter to hold out for a big buck so you have to let the little ones walk.  We have killed whitetails in the 190s and they are far apart,  but if a 150 to 175 class buck will make you happy,  then we should be hunting together as these bucks are our bread and butter.

We have had articles written about us in such hunting magazines as Hunt, Peterson Hunting, Safari Magazine, Hunting Illustrated and Black Powder Hunting.  In the 2009 Winter issue of Big Buck Magazine there is a story about a hunter that killed the" Fox Creek Giant".  It is a 200 point Whitetail taken at Fox Creek Alberta and we own all of the non-resident allocations south-west of the Fox Creek area,  read about this great deer.

I am really looking forward to the 2010 hunting season because we had a very easy fall and the hunting pressure was very light in my area.  We have had good success on getting trail pictures of deer after the hunting season was closed this year and look forward to hunting some monsters in 2010.
